If there is one thing we know about game developers, it’s that they love a good hyperbole. But when Hugo Martin, the guy steering the Doom ship, goes on a live stream and calls an upcoming DLC 'ginormous,' you should probably start clearing space on your hard drive.

During the February 2026 Slayers Club Live stream, Martin spent two hours casually dropping info-bombs that make the base game look like the opening act for a much bigger, much angrier headline.

Here is why the 'Dark Ages' expansion is currently the most ambitious thing in the FPS world - and why it’s essentially a sequel in a DLC-sized trench coat :

"Ginormous"...Really?

The internet is currently going crazy with one specific quote: Martin claims the DLC is 'basically like a sequel.' For the uninitiated, most DLCs are like getting an extra side of fries with your burger. This sounds like id Software is giving you a second burger, a milkshake, and the deed to the restaurant. We’ve seen this before with the studio’s 'Ancient Gods' expansion, which was so difficult and dense that it made the base game feel like a tutorial for kids. If they’re calling this one 'ginormous,' by those standards, we are talking about a massive shift in scale.

The Spear : Trading the Shield for Speed

The most intriguing leak from the stream was the mention of a new 'Spear.' In the base game of The Dark Ages, the protagonist is a walking tank - slow, heavy, and reliant on a gun-shield to defend himself. It’s very 'knight in a not-so-shining armour with a shotgun.' However, Martin hinted that this new spear is tied to a dash, leap, or teleport ability. Now THAT is a big deal. It suggests the DLC is pivoting away from the age-old 'block and counter' style and returning to the high-speed movement that fans loved in previous editions. Think of it like a superhero movie where the hero finally realizes they don't have to walk everywhere and starts flying instead.

The 'Perfect Dodge' Tease

One viewer during the stream asked about a 'perfect dodge' system - basically a mechanic that rewards you for moving at the last possible second. Martin didn't just say yes, he gave the camera a look so heavy with subtext it should have had its own epic soundtrack.

"Interesting. That’s all I’m gonna say," he teased. This reinforces the theory that the DLC is PRO-'Pro' players who found the base game’s shield mechanics a bit too sluggish.

The 'Anniversary' POV

So, why all the hype now? The answer is simple: 2026 is id Software’s 35th Anniversary. It's not everyday that you quietly drop a 'sequel-sized' expansion of a world famous title. The studio has been dropping 'stay tuned' breadcrumbs for months now. With the anniversary celebrations peaking in mid-2026, it’s highly likely we’ll see a major trailer this summer.

The Verdict : Why You Should Care?

The headlines from most of the publications right now, are all focused on the word 'Big DLC' but the real deal is the mechanical evolution.

Whether you’re a die-hard fan who’s been slaying demons since the 90s or someone who just likes a good "action-horror-fantasy" game, this expansion is going to be a great experience on its own. It’s trading the heavy armor for agile movement, adding weapons that double as jetpacks, and doing it all on a level that will put most of the premium-priced games to shame.

So, keep your eyes wide open for a trailer soon - because id Software seems to be very hopeful about what it's bringing to the table.
