Xbox has finally decided to compete against Sony’s console market, and yes, I am consciously speaking as Asha Sharma, the newly appointed CEO of Xbox, who took over the business from Phil Spencer last week, has nuked the entire industry by teasing the codename of the upcoming next-gen console. Titled “Project Helix”, the announcement was made a couple of hours ago on Xbox’s official X account (formerly Twitter) with a teaser revealing the name and logo. All hail to the marketing team for building pure hype without any flashy scenes from games.
Asha Sharma, on the other hand, greeted the community with a message full of commitment while reassuring “the return of the Xbox.” Further in her post, besides revealing the codename, she claims that the rumors were true and “Project Helix will lead in performance and play your Xbox and PC games.” (Hmm, a hybrid console, it sure gives some shady vibes)
Having a strong background in AI-driven fields, it is more likely that Xbox’s next-gen console will incorporate AI-based performance with raw power.
It all started with the rumored project Xbox Magnus, which revealed the multi-year strategic partnership with AMD to co-engineer silicon across different Xbox devices, such as consoles, handheld devices, and OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturers) partnered PCs.
Asha, in her post, also claims that she will talk about “Project Helix” with partners and studios at her first GDC, which is scheduled from March 9 to March 13, 2026.
“Development of Microsoft’s next-gen Xbox featuring an AMD semi-custom SoC is progressing well to support a launch in 2027.” As stated by Lisa Su during the 2025 Q4 investors meeting, the internet has flooded with speculations.
Is Helix a doppelganger of PC? Will Project Helix run Windows 11? Or will we get any hardware updates from Microsoft? Well, all we need to do is just wait till Asha Sharma openly challenges Sony’s upcoming PS6 at GDC 2026.
Will Xbox's “Project Helix” Rule the Next Generation of Console Gaming?
To be honest, Xbox can overrule the “coming soon” PS6 if Sony delays their project from the potential release date. Speaking of Xbox’s Project Helix, the console is expected for a release in 2027. As for now, Xbox faces grave situations like poor revenue generation, 50% boost in console price, as players shift towards the subscription model. Asha does claim that “Xbox will be the future of gaming” with an urgency to solve these problems.
According to many fans, including me, it seems the next-gen thing is about Xbox accepting its defeat in the console wars against PS and Nintendo by curating their upcoming console as a complement for PC. Moreover, if Sharma decides to go the OG way (not maintaining their first-party exclusives), Project Helix might turn out to be a flop in the gaming industry.
Final Verdict
Xbox’s resurrection would be a win-win situation if the corporation under Asha does not “flood the ecosystem with soulless 'AI slop”. Powered by AMD’s APU (Accelerated Processing Unit), rumored “Magnus”, the Xbox could roll out as the promised next-gen console, as insiders hint that Helix will be capable of running Windows 11 while blurring the thin line between PCs and consoles.
