The mystery teaser finally comes to an end as Bandai Namco has revealed Sword Art Online: Echoes of Aincrad as their new RPG game. Bandai Namco Entertainment’s official YouTube channel revealed the upcoming JRPG with an announcement trailer a couple of hours ago.
As an anime fan, especially a Sword Art Online geek, the game has ignited the hype to witness “peak” Aincrad with several players stuck in the NerveGear System. To be honest, Bandai knows the ball and announcing another SAO game in this economy was much needed!
For those who don’t know the lore, Bandai has been toying with players' emotions for a week with a snippet that showcased an anime art-style environment with a knight-like figure who’s mounted with a red shield and sword.
Without yapping further, let's delve into the virtual world to get a glimpse on release date, prices, and more information from the announcement trailer!
Sword Art Online: Echoes of Aincrad- Release Date and What’s More in the Inventory?
“Risk Your Reality,” the upcoming single-player action anime JRPG, is set to release on July 10, 2026. Where can you play this SAO spoof? Well, the game will be available on different platforms like PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and Steam.
Shifting towards the pricing factor, the game is available for pre-order registration on platforms mentioned above, along with Bandai Namco’s official website. Speaking of the pre-order bonus, players will be awarded with a weapon pack: Proto-Elucidator Series, which includes 6 weapon types+ Shield with 6 weapon blueprints. Further, the game has a Standard, Deluxe, and Ultimate edition with ample enhancements and bonuses that will help you skyrocket the floating castle of Aincrad.
Delving deeper, the Standard Edition is priced at $69.99, whereas the Deluxe Edition and Ultimate Edition are priced at $89.99 and $109.99, respectively. While the Deluxe Edition offers Expansion DLC, Starter Pack with Death Game Mode Early Unlock, the Ultimate Edition hits the spotlights with an Armor Pack: Flutter Boots and Robes, along with Unanswered//butterfly Contents App.
Is Sword Art Online: Echoes of Aincrad a Traditional Narrative?
Season 1, Sword Art Online Aincrad, is the commencement of an iconic series that is set in a virtual world of the NerveGear System. Like other “Isekai” genres, SAO revolves around Kazuto Kirigaya, also known as “Kirito,” and Asuna Yuuki, who are trapped in a virtual world amongst 10,000 players and are tasked to clear the 100 floors of the floating castle to advance further in the game.
However, in Echoes of Aincrad, gamers will have an option to create a customizable character (I would definitely play as Zoro). Following the same storyline, the upcoming anime JRPG does not include Kirito as a main protagonist; however, a cameo of Asuna in the approx. 2 minute trailer suggests that she will accompany players in their journey. Right off the bat, Kirito’s dual blades, Elucidator and Dark Repulsor, are seen in action!
As the game shares the same blood with Elden Ring, Phantom Blade Zero, and Black Myth: Zhong Kui, gamers can forge their customizable players with different enchantments, weapons, and special skills while increasing the player’s synergy with their teammates to adapt to their tactics!
Wrapping Note: Is Echoes of Aincrad Easy to Beat?
Don’t make a novice mistake by thinking that “ an anime game is easy to beat.” remember whenever a game has an “RPG” tag in it, believe me, it’s brutal and cruel. According to the gameplay demo, characters’ stats are as usual: kill enemies, and earn points to upgrade HP, skills, and other attributes like dexterity, attack, agility, and wisdom. Combat here is rough, with three attacks combined with parry and counter mechanics, the fast-paced boss fights are hard to win!
Let’s end this article with the weapons section. Players will get 6 categories: swords, rapiers, daggers, two-handed swords, two-handed axes, and maces. A single weapon can be equipped alongside a shield; a player cannot use two-handed weapons with a shield. Further, to make the game even more flashy, each weapon holds a unique animation! Unlike Ghost of Yotei (whose presence is still unknown to PC gaming), bosses in Echoes of Aincrad have a low-hit box and are boosted with unhinged attack patterns, letting this virtual reality RPG headbutt you like Zidane from the 2006 FIFA World Cup.
