Missing the “Default Skin Stereotype” or having a strong urge to shout, “He’s One Shot,” then my friend, you're right on time, as Epic Games has announced its free-to-play battle royale’s re-entry to the Google Play Store. Announced on March 4, 2026, Tim Sweeney (CEO of Epic Games) stated that Fortnite will be returning to Android with a revamped Google Play Store’s policies and fee structure.
Google, on the other hand, stated that the corporation would now enable mobile app developers to use its own billing system.
Ending the long-running feud between Epic Games and Google over their monopoly on play store’s rules and in-app purchases, both corporations are now looking into the halted success of Fortnite, which once ruled the world of Android with its stellar theme and fast-paced gameplay mechanics.
The remontada was announced in two phases, following a dispute over the payment system, Fortnite returned on Android in the US lobby in December 2025 with a legal settlement; however, according to Google’s overhaul, the global rollout is expected by September 2027.
Changed Made by Epic Games & Google Play Store
“Google is opening up Android all the way with robust support for competing stores, competing payments, and a better deal for all developers. So, we've settled all of our disputes worldwide. THANKS GOOGLE!” Shared by Tim Sweeney on his X account (formerly Twitter), Google’s Play Store major updates are aimed at lowering in-game purchases, along with other fee structures to reduce prices for developers.
Sameer Samat (President of Android EcoSystem) said, “Android has always driven innovation in the industry through its unique flexibility and openness. At this important moment, we continue to be at the forefront of how developers distribute their apps and games on billions of devices globally”. Reassuring enthusiasts all over the world, some major changes were announced that will start to roll out soon in some expected regions like the US, UK, and the European Economic Area by June 2026.
Samat stated that Google will introduce a Registered App Store program that will make users' lives easier by installing an alternative app store with “streamlined flow”.
Shifting ahead, Samat claimed that Google will introduce a new business model for Google Play that will include lower prices for developers, while providing them with the ability to use their own billing system alongside Google Play’s default payment system with a lower service charge.
Sweeney, in another post, stated that “Fortnite will return to Google Play Store worldwide soon. Epic Games Store continues supporting Android worldwide alongside Windows and Mac, and installation on Android will become much easier later in 2026.”
Final Verdict
For my beloved gamers who are unaware of this tragedy that happened in 2020, in the court council of San Francisco. Accused of monoplizing billing system for a competitive position, Epic Games won the trial in 2023, while forcing Google to change its set of policies and providing leverage to external developers.
