Vikings! A rare human specimen that was known for its grotesque art of war and punishments that sent shivers down the spine. Discussing it in the big 2026 might seem bizarre to you, but guess what, these maniacs have a large following on various social media platforms and in the gaming industry! Speaking of the gaming industry, Ubisoft had set high standards by releasing Assassin’s Creed Valhalla in the industry (the game was released in 2020)

For the first time in my entire gaming life, this game felt like an achievement to me. More specifically, AC: Valhalla is one of the best Viking sandbox games known to mankind. With this, welcome to the 6th blog of “Is it worth investing in 2026,” and today, we’ll discuss the ins and outs of Assassin’s Creed Valhalla that sent the entire Assassin’s Creed fandom into frenzy six years ago.

Although the answer to this question is a simple, big “YES,” we’ll be scrutinizing each aspect that makes the game a gold standard in the RPG Vikings genre. So, without further ado, let’s dive deep into the harsh Scandinavian climate, where axes and Sumbl (a traditional drinking feast) were considered a staple.

Assassin’s Creed Valhalla : A Super-Sub that Saved the Entire Lineage!

Despite being heavily criticized by several analysts and fans, Assassin’s Creed Valhalla delivered some screamers that saved Ubisoft from getting further hate! I mean, the hate continues, but this particular game somehow came into clutch mode and increased expectation throughout the entire fandom! According to analysts and reports from Reddit hall of famers, the game sold 3.5 million copies in the first week right after its release.

Likewise, the game continues to pop up with a whopping discounted price in the global market as soon as there’s a sale on Steam, PlayStation Store, or Epic Games Store, which defines the high return on investment a player could get from AC: Valhalla. Right off the bat, Ubisoft has stuffed the game with full-fledged content, bug fixes, and additional expansions that add real-time value in the game since its release.

As your gaming guru, I would definitely recommend you try this game once, as unlike other traditional Assassin’s Creed games, Valhalla includes RPG mechanics that make the gameplay even more challenging and exciting.

Before moving forward in the blog, I would like to clarify some things!

  • Buying this game or not totally depends on your mood, so don’t put me behind bars, as no game has attained perfection during its runtime.
  • The blog will include three major aspects: Storyline, Visuals, and Combat Mechanism. No historical accuracy will be used as the game is based on historical fiction.

Assassin’s Creed Valhalla : Is Swinging an Axe a Good Combat Practice?

Presumably! You have watched hundreds of walkthroughs, and now you are questioning yourself. Why are you engaged with this blog? Well, to be very honest, I would relate this to you, mate, as the combat mechanism in Assassin’s Creed Valhalla is not that great that it should have been! Compared to previous instalments, the combat mechanics are pretty good, but fail drastically in stealth.

An Assassin’s Creed game without its main USP? Yeah, you heard me right, the game focuses more on head-on combat with a minimal stealth mechanism. If you played AC: Odyssey, then you are on the right track, as Valhalla also follows the heavy RPG mechanism instead of its stealth-prioritized gameplay. Moving ahead, players can change the gender of the main character just like any other RPG game. Focusing on stamina management and parrying in the combat mechanism gets a scoreline of 7/10. Despite lacking the main highlight of the entire franchise, Valhalla gathered millions of fans to praise its combat system. Every strike, defense, and deflection gives a sturdy and raw feel as you get from other RPG games.

For the first time, Ubisoft allowed players to use environmental buildups like raids and skirmishes for combat, and that's what makes the game entirely different from other Assassin’s Creed games. Forging ahead, players can use abilities like Adrenaline that build up with every strike and can throw weapons or dive straight into the enemy.

It’s a bad day for parkour lovers because Vikings are meant to charge straight into a fortress with their brute force. Developers changed the entire layout of the game by introducing a power-based progression system where players can adjust Eivor’s power system according to distinct playstyles.

While abilities are excavated from the books of knowledge, three power grids titled “Bear (melee), Wolf (ranged), and Raven (stealth)” can be upgraded with the collected skill points by completing missions, kills, and explorations. Similarly, weapons and armors can be upgraded with these in-game tokens. Instead of XP, the game rewards skill points, which will increase your total power, and this scale will decide whether you are ready for a new region or not!

Assassin’s Creed Valhalla : Is Free-Roam in 9th Century Scandinavia Worth Your Time?

How about some Clash of Clans while playing Assassin’s Creed Valhalla, and I am dead serious about it! The game extensively offers brand-new features like Settlement, where players can build and expand their own Viking settlement. Valhalla is not just about Assassin Brotherhood fighting their sweats off against Templars, but it’s more likely, “Can you handle some real Nordic shit?”

Resource management is another thing that makes the game more thrilling as you’ll need to keep vital resources in count to expand your kingdom. Besides this, the upgraded settlements will provide you with more skill points, new abilities, side quests, and combat buffs straight from the “Isekai anime.”

Speaking of visual effects, the game dives deep into a full day and night cycle that adds charisma to the Scandinavian world-building. On the contrary, volumetric lighting and realistic shadow effects are some key aspects that give an outlook of next-gen graphics. What I really liked about this game is that Ubisoft held onto their comments and delivered a majestic tapestry of 9th-century Norway, which is undoubtedly a pure bliss to millions of gamers out there. Sound is another essential part that has uplifted the game to “the big leagues.” Whether it’s Ambient VFX, bustling of Nordic towns, or different climatic conditions, the game stands out at the pinnacle in the entire franchise besides Assassin’s Creed: Shadows. Shifting towards the map section, the primary map that showcases England is massive and will take sleepless nights to discover monastery raids, loots, and artifacts; however, the map size of Norway, with other regions like Vinland and Asgard, is comparatively smaller than that in Odyssey.

Does Assassin’s Creed Valhalla also depict the Same Old Brotherhood vs Templar Faction?

With three expansion DLCs, the game’s core storyline can be completed within 60-70 hours; however, the playtime exceeds more than 150 hours if someone wants to explore raids, treasures, distinct regions, and side quests. Giving a 6/10 score to the narrative, I feel that this game has tons of repetitive missions that newcomers definitely won’t like much.

Despite a great storyline, developers focused more on fillers and stuffed the storyboarding with loot missions to expand the Viking settlement. Nonetheless, the game consists of a compelling narrative with amazing character design. All hail to the developers for going deep into Eivor’s design. The way he looks and the representation of his braids with the chainmail armor is just peak.

The plot remains Assassins vs Templars the whole time! While the lore showcases Eivor going full throttle against Anglo-Saxon kingdoms with his fellow Vikings during the raid of England, the core follows the same old formulae from its predecessors. Known as the Order of the Ancient, the game showcases a long-running feud between Assassins from the time of Origin and the predecessor of the Templar Order, who seek a perfect global society.

Likewise, the storyline focuses on the creation of the Templar Order, while Eivor works as an ally with the hidden ones to eliminate the hideous plans of the Order of the Ancients.

Wrapping Note

All in all, the game is worth your time and can be played for more knowledge of the bizarre Assassin’s Creed timeline. Still, if you look from the perspective of an Assassin’s Creed fan, the game will never satisfy your thirst for playing a game as goated as AC: Brotherhood, as these new AC games lack the charm the old ones hold.
