Relive feudal Japan and katana-wielding clashes as Capcom’s legendary series, Onimusha, has returned from its grave after a 20-year hiatus. The franchise has captivated a generation with its instalments such as Warlords, Demon Siege, and more. Announced during the TGA 2024, officials revealed the latest instalment titled “Way of the Swords,” with several trailers and snippets, is going to be released in 2026. The production house has yet to announce the official release date.

So, if you want to explore the cultural diversity of Edo-period Japan through supernatural entities, the Onimusha franchise is a match made in heaven for you. Shifting towards the hotline and buzz created all over the internet… fans are questioning whether Onimusha will surpass Ghost of Tsushima, or can Onimusha become an alternate of Ghost of Tsushima? With a million possibilities in our minds, let’s dive deep into this speculation to find whether Musashi has the guts to replace Sakai or not.

Return of the Onimusha Franchise

To be honest, I am very happy to see Capcom bringing back the og into the battlefields. I still remember the time when I booted up the Onimusha: Dawn of the Dream and created havoc with Miyamoto Musashi. Emotions apart, the officials showcased a brand-new gameplay trailer at the Gamescom 2025 and Sony State of Play that happened on February 12, 2026. Witnessing an electrifying duel between ferocious samurai and the powers of the Oni-Gauntlet has got fans rolling on the ground. According to many fans and industry insiders, the upcoming game will offer nostalgia of stealth extermination, godly parry mechanics, and scenic beauty through its world-building.

Before moving forward, I want to solve some fan theories about Onimusha: Way of the Swords that this game will not be a soul-like game, although the mechanics feel niche, with the power to absorb souls, it's a way lot different from those typical rpg game where you leave everything once dead.

Fun Fact: In tribute to the legendary actor Toshiro Mifune, Netflix produced an anime on Onimusha while transposing Mifune’s face in the animation during its marketing campaign.

Will Onimusha Surpass Ghost of Tsushima?

Undoubtedly! It's a tough fight; even Ghost of Yotei has not surpassed its predecessors, if seen from a “creating a legacy point of view. Capcom, on the other hand, is infamously known for its production and choreography in action games, but when the topic comes to Onimusha, opinions change.

Unlike Tsushima, Onimusha has been treated like an AA title, and as the franchise has not tasted the essence of mainstream titles, it's slightly difficult for Onimusha to replace Sucker Punch’s Ghost of Tsushima. While Tsushima offers cinematic storytelling and massive world-building, Onimusha stands as a pillar in reviving the classic action games.

Although the officials have announced that Onimusha will be an open-world sandbox thriving with spirits and demons, it still lacks complete player-driven exploration. While Tsushima focuses on different fighting abilities and rapid changes in stance and secondary weapons, Onimusha’s gameplay showcased robust gameplay, giving a much more expressive katana combat with supernatural abilities!

Shifting towards the in-game upgrades, Tsuhsima has a variety of upgrades, from armor to smoke bombs every weaponary adds a unique detail in the gameplay. Upgrading the skill tree is no joke; from stealth infiltration to killing generals, it takes a lot of sweat to unlock new abilities. Onimusha, on the other hand have same skill tree mechanics as Devil May Cry, a progression ability system where collected souls in the Oni Gauntlet are used to unlock and upgrade the combat skills that will give players a free hand in customizing Musashi as per their will.

There’s a possibility that Onimusha: Way of the Swords might come close in the rankings with Ghost of Tsushima, but surpassing the gold standard of samurai games seems nearly impossible. You don’t need to put me behind bars, as it's just a speculation according to the game’s accessibility.

Onimusha : Way of the Swords-Storyline

An action game, but with the combat mechanics similar to Sekiro, Onimusha: Way of the Sword is all set to bring the ultimate “Issen” counterattack, with precise parrying and sword combat. Set in the Edo period Kyoto, the upcoming instalment is a blend of historical Japan and dark supernatural fantasy. The narrative will revolve around the legendary swordsman Miyamoto Musashi, who wields an ancient artifact known as the Oni Gauntlet to slay demons called Genma. Fighting against the malice, accompany Musashi as he travels the corners of Kyoto to find the truth behind the demonic corruption with a sense of vengeance!

Final Verdict

Everyone has a different opinion, and according to the features discussed above, it seems like Onimusha would join hands with Ghost of Tsushima instead of surpassing it. While both the game depicts the samurai genre, Tsushima was a fresh IP to conquer the mainstream games, whereas Onimusha is more of a nostalgic revival of the long-lost action series.
