Is this real life? Is this just fantasy? Caught in a landslide, no escape from reality…..Well, Bohemian Rhapsody’s first few lines are now making sense, as Sony Interactive Entertainment might cancel the release of its flagship games on PC in the near future. Although this news has yet to be confirmed by the officials, Bloomberg's renowned journalist Jason Schreier discussed Sony’s strategy for releasing games on PC while hinting at Insomniac’s Marvel's Wolverine, which is going to be released on September 15, 2026.
Well, it's not a speculation as most of the major sources like Digital Foundry, Sneaker SO, and Jason himself confirmed that Sony’s flagship games will remain exclusive on PS5. Reportedly!
Sony’s attempt to capture the pc market was not accomplished, even after porting exclusive single-players like The Last of Us, Marvel’s Spider-Man, Horizon, and God of War. So the corporation might release the service only projects for personal computers while making the traditional single-player exclusive on PlayStation.
According to Digital Foundry, the corporation will be porting PlayStation live service games as it needs a massive amount of players on board. Speaking of AA titles, “Sony is publishing in partnership with external studios, there’s a little incentive to keep them exclusive, those studios would naturally want to reach the widest possible audience for their game and business popularity”. Well, it's a much different story from first-party titles, as the recent State of Play announced SIE projects like Death Stranding 2: On the Beach for a pc release, which is not an internal production of PlayStation Studios.
Will Sony’s Move Adversely Affect PC Gaming?
According to the latest episode of the Triple Click podcast titled “Why Phil Spencer Retired, and What’s Next for Xbox”, it is confirmed that Sony will definitely close doors for first-party titles to release on PC. Will it affect PC gaming? Or will the corporation go under heavy loss?... There’s too much going on in the industry; however, Jason claimed that “I wouldn’t be surprised if it never came to PC, but even if it does, you have a strong idea of what that is, and that you need a PlayStation to play it, at least for the indefinite future.”
Although it's a significant move by Sony to shift back, as porting such single-player games requires a hefty budget with the desired graphics and an insane 200 frame rate to run these godly titles, Schreier thinks that making such a move would not revolutionize the gaming experience, and further says that Sony might resume with the long-running experiment. Still, he hints that Sony will keep games like Ghost of Yotei (the game has not even received a pc release date yet), and the upcoming Marvel’s Wolverine as PlayStation exclusive to maintain the new-era of gaming. Regarding Insomniac, Schreier stated that even if Sony decides to continue with porting PC games, Wolverine will remain an exclusive to the PS ecosystem for a long time, while delaying its release date for PC.
Final Verdict
Moving back from pc porting might help Sony recover their revenue and time, as it's not that profitable; however, according to Jason’s opinion, it will hurt the sentiment of pc gamers and will cause significant damage to Sony.
