Reddit CEO Steve Huffman wants to keep his social media platform, Reddit, more authentic. Authenticity, a term that is currently nowhere to be found in platforms like Elon Musk’s X (formerly Twitter) or Mark Zuckerberg’s Facebook. Huffman plans to keep Reddit bot-free. For that, he simply suggested that the platform use biometrics like touch or face ID to ensure that whatever activity is taking place from an account is from an actual user and not some fake digital account.
Huffman’s idea was reflected in his statement he gave while appearing in a recent podcast, where he said that “A human has to touch or do or look at something.”

Reddit, like many social media platforms, is flooded with AI-generated content, also labeled as “AI slop” by the people themselves. A report shows that around 15% of the posts there are likely AI generated. However, we cannot rely on it, as it comes from Originality AI, which itself offers AI services, something that hasn’t proved useful to authentic creators.
In fact, trustworthy websites are doing such things, like first cutting headcounts and then replacing them with fake AI profiles generating fake reviews. Take the latest case of ClickOut Media’s website called VideoGamer, which Google disdained by de-indexing it for such a deed.

While this move may prove beneficial, some users might be concerned over their anonymity. They can take a sigh of relief, as none of this, including the face detection thing, if applied, will reveal any information about them. They can still take part in communities without revealing themselves and keep earning Karma.
Huffman’s Move May Still be an Issue For Reddit
There will be humans on Reddit, but that’s not a guarantee for the AI slop people are experiencing there. The move will be effective against things like automatic comment sentries users have developed using AI agents and any other activities bots are doing on behalf of users.

Let’s say somebody scanned their face and Reddit registered a human is using the platform. That same human just uploaded a video showing nations as animals walking weirdly or Will Smith trying to smith a metal Will Smith. AI enthusiasts generating such slop cannot be trusted with it. It’s like giving an AK-47 into the hands of a monkey.
Then What’s the Heart of the Solution?
Although we speak of Reddit about to take some action on keeping it a human-centric platform. It needs to focus on AI-generated slop too. For that, the platform can go strategically, pulling the plug on bot activity first and cracking down on AI-generated content. That’ll help in keeping the platform free from bots as well as mind-numbing content.
There are literally subreddits focused on AI slop. One of them is literally titled r/aislop. So, maybe that’s a good place to start phase 2 of what we suggested here.
