An industry insider called Yogesh Brar posted something about OnePlus on Twitter (now X) and the internet lost its mind. It said that the Chinese company will shut down in “select Global markets" but didn’t mention the specifics. That post is now gone, but it left enough fuel to flame the fire and the digital jungle is being consumed by the rumor-led wildfire that it might exit India.

Though the company had already denied such a move earlier this year, the recent exit of its India CEO, Robin Liu, may pull the users into some doubt regarding OnePlus’ future in India. However, the CEO stepping down has more to do with him pursuing “personal passions” and nothing to do with the smartphone manufacturer leaving the country.

“OnePlus India operations continue with local strategy and business continuity ensured,” the company said. The statement is a reassurance that whatever the users are reading on the internet is just influencers trying to capitalize using their clickbait tactics.

That Twitter post, however, did mention that “India market will most likely get budget & mid-range products.” But it’s also deleted now, so we don’t have to worry about such things until an official statement is issued. A more credible source, 9to5Google, also talked to a source aware of the company’s behind-the-scenes workings and the report indicates that OnePlus does plan to cease operations in some European regions.

India is One of The Major Markets for OnePlus

OnePlus came a bit later in India after its official global launch but the country became a major market for it. The company even claimed in one of their early announcements that India brought in 1/3 of its revenue in 2017. We can’t confirm if that number still holds the place but OnePlus phones, especially the Nord series phones, are still popular there.

Of course, it doesn’t dominate the market and compete with the likes of tech giants including Samsung, Apple, Xiaomi, and more. It’s tough out there amid such competition and some reports suggest that OnePlus’ market share has dropped quite a bit. This is most likely due to the common issues like green lines appearing on its display.

That said, OnePlus leaving India isn’t in the cards. In fact, the company can certainly work on user feedback to give them a better experience, which also means a firm grasp in a growing economy for them.
