The names Frank Castle and Peter Parker, better known as the Punisher and Spider-Man, don’t really go hand in hand in the comic stories. Soon, we’ll be seeing them together in the upcoming Spider-Man film adaptation in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The trailer featured both, and it doesn’t seem like they got off the wrong foot like in the comics.

But, as their history goes, will they be fighting each other in the film? Even in a scene or two? We will analyze a few bits from Marvel comic stories and then from some TV and film adaptations from the MCU.

Spider-Man and the Punisher Have the Same Goal But Different Ways

Let’s talk about our antihero Frank Castle first. If you’ll look at his life, it’s a tragedy. He lost his family, which is an event that’s altered in different adaptations. But the Mafia hit is what’s canonical here. He tried to give his family justice through the legal system and when it failed, he took the matter in his own hands. That is when Frank Castle becomes the Punisher, punishing the crime his way. Lethal, brutal, and permanent.

Spider-Man had similar motivations. In his case, the iconic Uncle Ben dies at the hands of a burglar. It was Uncle Ben’s infamous advice, “With great power comes great responsibility,” that kept him from killing that burglar and kept him fighting crime without giving them the permanent death, unlike Frank.

Frank’s Motivations Hasn’t Changed in the Marvel Cinematic Universe

Just recently, Frank Castle became a part of the grand Marvel Cinematic Universe. He appeared in a scene from Daredevil: Born Again where Matt Murdock (Charlie Cox), aka the titular Daredevil, visits him. Their conversation turns really emotional after Frank sees through him, seeing how Foggy’s death is eating him up.

In this scene, there are subtle hints that Frank is still a good man who has accepted his family’s death and he has started to live with it. He isn’t out there killing criminals for now, which is understandable after someone put a bullet in White Tiger’s head with his logo on his T-shirt and the bullet.

But the conversation between him and Murdock is a testament that he still doesn't believe the system when he says, “you and your goddamn system,” after Matt tells him that he let the “system” take care of Foggy’s death. Frank Castle still believes in his personal justice.

Frank is Out on the Streets Again, With Spider-Man

Spider-Man : Brand New Day has confirmed a thing about Frank Castle. It’s that he is back on the street, fighting crime. But Spider-Man and him don't seem to be in cahoots exactly.

Frank rides in a van and Spidey is web-slinging. Both seem to be fighting criminals in this clip. However, they also appear to be dealing with the situation in their own styles. Frank is after a tank and seems desperate to rain down justice his way, i.e., finishing whoever is inside that tank, and Spidey is trying his way by stopping Frank from killing them. He’ll probably be the winner and the criminals will end up stranded in his web.

We may see them fighting each other in a non-lethal way during this scene. But Spider-Man in Frank Castle’s crosshairs isn’t likely to be a thing in Brand New Day. There’s another scene where Frank says to him, “You’re losing it, kid.” That sounds real friendly. What’s more, he appears to be a reinforcement in this particular scene.

Considering all that, we will see the Punisher vs Spider-Man in the film, but in a friendly neighborhood Spidey way.
