We all saw Jason Momoa as Aquaman and thought, “Wow, he’s doing a great job at brooding over the king of brooding (Batman) and talking to fish.” But deep down, in that dark, cigar-smoke-filled corner of our souls, we knew. He wasn’t meant to be a clean-cut king of the sea. He was meant to be a pale, chain-swinging, planet-genociding space biker who's very emotional about his secret space dolphin gang and does very questionable stuff.

Well, James Gunn finally looked at a comic book and thought Jason was his guy. So now, Momoa is officially trading the trident for a hook and chain, and we are more than ready for the absolute carnage that he's going to bring to the screens. Here's OrbeatX's deep dive into the transition from Fish-Boy to The Main Man of DC (that's not Superman, not this time, not for us).

1. The Audition Files : Who Almost Got "Momoa-ed"?

Before he was Arthur Curry, Jason was knocking on literally every door in the superhero neighbourhood. He didn’t always get the keys, and sometimes, he just didn't want them at all.

Batman (The 'Booby Trap' Audition) : Jason famously auditioned for Bruce Wayne in Batman v Superman. In an interview with Fox Chicago’s Jake Hamilton, he admitted he felt the audition was a 'booby trap' because Ben Affleck had already been cast. "I just pretended like Batman got killed in an alleyway... I tried to play him like I was just down and out, poor, over it."

The Result : Zack Snyder loved the "badass attitude" but told him, "I want you to play Aquaman."

  • Jason’s Official Statement : "I was like, 'What the f**k are you talking about?'" (Source : Fandango interview).

Drax the Destroyer (The "I Won't Grunt" Reject) : Jason actually turned down the role of Drax in Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy.

  • Jason’s Official Statement : "It didn't really fit in my time because I've done so many things where I don't say much and I'm colored up and I have my shirt off again." He felt he’d already "been there and done that" with his character Ronon Dex on Stargate Atlantis.

Lobo (The 'Manifestation' Win) : Jason told Variety and ScreenRant that Lobo was always his favorite comic character. When James Gunn took over DC, Momoa sent a text immediately.

  • Jason’s Official Statement : “Lobo was always my favorite... If they ever call me and ask me to play it? It’s a f**k yeah.”

2. The "Main Man" 101 : A Science Project Gone Very Wrong

As mentioned by the YouTube channel ORIGIN GURU, Lobo represents chaotic evil at its purest. If you think your high school science project was a disaster, allow Lobo to humble you kid. Superman is the 'Last Son of Krypton' because his planet exploded. Lobo is the 'Last Zarnian' because he blew up his own planet for an A+ on a science project, at the age of 17 (yes, you read that right). He created a swarm of lethal scorpion-like creatures just to see what would happen.

Spoiler : Everyone died, and he gave himself an 'A+'. He’s not a villain with a grand plan, he just happens to be a guy who values academic excellence over the survival of his species.

The'"Unkillable' Paradox

Lobo doesn't just have a healing factor, he can actually regenerate his entire body in seconds from even a single drop of blood or a piece of his skull.

But wait, it gets better. He’s actually permanently banned from the afterlife. That's because he apparently caused so much chaos in Hell that they sent him to Heaven. He wrecked Heaven so badly they kicked him out of there, too. He is officially the only person in the DC Universe whose presence is so offensive that death itself backed out a bit.

3. The Supergirl Showdown: A Reality Check

As broken down by YouTube channel 'Comics Explained', Lobo’s introduction into the Supergirl lore (specifically the New 52 version) is a tornado of angst and a lot of property damage. Here's what we can expect to happen :

The Fake Knockout : When Kara Zor-El (Supergirl) meets Lobo, she's frustrated and lonely. She would knock Lobo out with a single punch, leaving her feeling guilty because she doesn't know her own strength.

The Dark Tactic : However, Lobo was actually just pretending to be hurt. He wasn't dead, he just wanted to get inside her research facility, "The Block", which is located in Earth's core.

The Neural Overload : Knowing he can't beat her with pure muscle, Lobo would use 'hypersonics'. Because of her super-senses, the noise creates a neural overload for her - a genius strategy to level the playing field.

4. The Visuals : "Drunk Biker Cosplay" or Comic Accuracy?

The Redditors at r/DC_Cinematic have been dissecting the new look of Momoa as Lobo.

They have been describing the look as 'pretty dead on' to the comics, though some joked he looks like a 'member of KISS' or 'Jason Momoa at an Abbath concert'.

Fans are superhyped (to say the least) to see the Spacehog (his iconic custom bike) and his famous titanium alloy chain. But hear us out, the best part is that the bike only responds to him, and is actually a time-traveling masterpiece.

What Can DC Serve the Fans?

With Jason Momoa officially unleashed, what storylines could James Gunn serve up to secure that #1 spot among the hearts of DC fans?

Lobo vs. Superman : As seen in the clips from the YouTube channel 'ClipZone: Heroes & Villains', their first meeting is usually a disaster for the local architecture. In 'Superman: Man of Tomorrow', Lobo uses Kryptonite-laced weapons to slow Clark down, showing he’s always prepared for a 'Blue Boy' encounter.

The Red Daughter Arc : As 'Comics Explained' highlighted in their video, Lobo’s taunting and 'ownership' offer to Supergirl is what ultimately pushes her over the edge, leading her to become a Red Lantern. In the comics, her repressed trauma from the death of Krypton manifests as a chaotic arc, making her the perfect host for a Red Power Ring. This wouldn't be a lot more than a cool costume change, it'd be a massive canon event for the upcoming Lanterns series on HBO.

Imagine a scenario where the Green Lanterns, Hal Jordan and John Stewart, are investigating a 'cosmic homicide' only to find an out-of-control Kryptonian Red Lantern is the primary suspect. This would perfectly bridge the gap between the Earth-bound lanterns to the wider cosmic chaos of the DCU, probably introducing Atrocitus and the Red Lantern Corps. Given that Lanterns is expected to release just before Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, this arc could be the very link that ties the TV and film sides together in one bloody, rage-filled knot.

The Space Dolphins : If DC doesn't include his secret flock of space dolphins, we are going to riot. These dolphins are Lobo's "one true love," and harming them triggers a John Wick-level vengeance mode.

The R-Rated Solo Run : Fans on Reddit are begging for a solo series where Lobo gets to be the 'Main Man' without the PG-13 filters. We're talking about a guy who was hired to kill Santa Claus (as seen in the Lobo Paramilitary Christmas Special).

The Verdict : The Bastich is Here!

Jason Momoa’s trajectory from the 'The Great Khal' of Game of Thrones to the 'King of Atlantis' has all led to this moment. Lobo allows him to be loud, energetic, and unapologetically savage.

The DCU just got a lot more interesting, a lot more violent, and significantly more 'Fraggin' awesome.
