Back in September 2023, playing Starfield felt like being stuck in the world's longest airport security line. You’d get all dressed up for a grand space adventure, only to spend half your time staring at a loading screen. It was less Star Wars and more Space-Traffic Simulator.
Fast forward to 2026, that narrative has taken a (successful) turn. Sure, the PS5 and PS5 Pro launch and the 'Free Lanes' update are the shiny new ornaments, but there is a lot more under the hood that makes this game worth your precious SSD space and time.

Here is why Starfield is finally hitting the right notes in 2026:
1. The ‘Cruise Mode’ (Yes, Finally!)
As Crawlspace pointed out in his video, the biggest vibe-killer was the lack of seamless travel. But with the Free Lanes update, Bethesda finally gave us Cruise Mode. You can now point your ship at a distant moon, kick your feet up, and actually fly there.

While in Cruise, the new Terran Armada Incursion system can also yank you out of warp for a surprise fight. It’s the 'emergent gameplay' Bethesda promised us three years ago. You will no longer be clicking the map, you’ll actually get to explore a galaxy that wants to shoot at you.
2. The Modders Have Rebuilt the Universe
If Bethesda built the house in 2023, the modding community has now turned it into a five-star resort. We’re talking about massive overhauls like 'Lazarus Awakened,' which is being considered the definitive expansion for the Vanguard quest, adding several hours of dungeon-crawling through Terrormorph-infested scenes.

The "Star Wars" Conversion: There is literally a mod that turns the game into a better Star Wars RPG than most of the official ones, complete with Jedi powers and droids.
The "Call Your Ship" Mod: Feeling tired of walking 2km back to your landing bay? Press a button, and your ship lands right in front of you. Your virtual knees will thank you (forever).
3. The X-Tech System: Perfect for Looter-Shooter Addicts
Remember when finding a 'Legendary' gun meant getting a pistol that did +10% damage to aliens? Boring. The new X-Tech system (shoutout to Renfail for the breakdown) has resolved the issue. So, now you can hunt for rare X-Tech resources to re-roll specific weapon perks. It’s added a layer of dopamine that was missing at launch. Combined with the Superior and Exceptional gear tiers, your James Holden cosplay is finally going to have the firepower it deserves.
4. PS5 and PS5 Pro: The Final Form
Bethesda has been very popular among gamers for the weird, harmless glitches in its massive open-world games. Because the games are so huge and let you interact with everything, the physics engine sometimes loses its mind.
For the new PS5 players, the wait has actually turned out to be a blessing. The PS5 Pro version features PSSR upscaling that makes the cities look like actual hubs of civilization instead of empty shopping malls, a common complaint from Crawlspace's revisit (for all the right reasons though). That's because upon landing, the planets felt like giant bubbles of absolute nothingness. You’d walk for 10 minutes, find a repetitive pirate base, and feel like there was no 'magic' left in the exploration.
The Fix: With the PS5 Pro and high-end PCs, ‘Performance Mode’ lets the game run at 60fps. This makes the movement look smooth and quite responsive. Now, it’s like switching from a flip-book to a high-def movie.
5. Heart and Easter Eggs: Bethesda's Secret Sauce
Remember Alex Hay? The massive Bethesda fan (the kind of guy who spent thousands of hours in Skyrim and Fallout). He was diagnosed with lung cancer and was eagerly waiting for Starfield. But when the game was delayed from March to September 2023, Alex posted a heartbreaking message on Reddit: "Bit gutted... now it looks like I won’t get to play it." He passed away in March 2023, just months before the game launched.
Almost immediately after his post went viral, YouTubers and thousands of Redditors started a social media campaign using the hashtag #AlexInStarfield. They asked Bethesda to include a tribute to Alex so he could "be among the stars" even if he couldn't play the game. The developers at Bethesda saw the situation and quietly added the note into the game before it launched in September 2023.
So now, if you visit 'The Eye' (a space station in the game), you can find Alex Hay’s Note.
It says: "To all my friends and fellow explorers, I’m always with you, out there in the starfield. Love always, Alex.”
It’s become a bit of a tradition for players to stop by The Eye every now and then, just to say "Hi" to Alex. It’s a reminder that while the game is about exploring the stars, the real heart of the journey is the community of explorers here on Earth.
On another note, gamers who've played Skyrim know that almost every city guard says the same line: "I used to be an adventurer like you, then I took an arrow in the knee." It became one of the most famous (and overused) memes in internet history.
In Starfield, Bethesda gave a nod to this in the Crippling skill (which helps you disable enemies). When you reach the final rank of that skill, the icon literally shows a futuristic arrow piercing a knee. There’s even a colonist who will start to tell you they used to be an explorer, then stop and say, "Never mind, it's a long story."
The game is stuffed with such secrets (to say the least).
OrbeatX Verdict
With Starfield launching on PS5 on April 7, 2026, a whole new generation of players will get to discover what makes Starfield special (we're talking about things including and beyond the gameplay). For the pro gamers who have been around since 2011, it’s going to be pure nostalgia. For the 'noobs' joining the party in 2026, it’ll be a crash course in why Bethesda fans are so obsessed with the studio.
So, is Starfield in 2026 the greatest game of all time? Well, probably not. But as Renfail sarcastically notes, the "forced hate" is starting to look a bit silly, given the studio's genuine attempts to improve everything. It’s like 'Skyrim in Space' with the rough edges that the gaming studio has finally managed to sand down.
